Osteotec and Ortho Consulting Group extend support for global hand surgery in 2023

Osteotec and Ortho Consulting Group (OCG) are delighted to announce we will be supporting the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) again in 2023 after renewing our charity partnership for another 12 months.

Last year the companies raised £5,000 for the BSSH through a gruelling exercise challenge which saw participants – plus friends and families – collectively run, row, ski and cycle 5,000-plus miles in just 24 hours.

All the proceeds raised went towards development of the Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) in the capital of Malawi, a new purpose-built healthcare facility for treating injured patients free of charge.

Malawi has the ninth highest rate of road traffic deaths in the world. For every death, there are 25 non-fatal injuries causing permanent disability which can affect whole families and lead to poverty and dependency.

Over the next five years BSSH volunteers will be working in the LION Hand Unit, collaborating with local staff to run specialist hand clinics and regular hand trauma and elective lists, while promoting sustainability through education and training.

The LION centre was officially opened by Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on April 28.

“It’s been incredible to see how our support has been transformed into bricks and mortar in Malawi and to that we have played a small part in improving quality of care for patients in Lilongwe,” said Anthony McClellan, OCG and Osteotec Group General Manager.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting the BSSH again in 2023 and will be redoubling our efforts to raise more money through our fundraising challenges in the coming months.

“It’s fantastic to be able to give something back to the hand surgery community not just here in the UK, but around the world.”

On August 26 and 27, OCG and Osteotec staff will once again be limbering up for another 24-hour exercise undertaking as they join BSSH members from across the UK in the BSSH Osteotec Lake of Stars (BOLOS) Challenge.

Held at Hampshire Court Hotel in Basingstoke from 10am to 10am over the two days, the team are inviting members of the public to join them as they try to run / walk, row, swim and cycle the circumference of Lake Malawi – more than 1,700km in total.

“The BSSH LION Hand Unit launched earlier this year is already proving its worth in the delivery of hand trauma and reconstruction for the people of Malawi. We are truly delighted to be partnering with Osteotec on this unique project,” said Jonathan Jones, Consultant Hand Surgeon and member of the BSSH LION leadership team.

“The BSSH LION team are very grateful for the vision and energy that OCG and Osteotec have provided to help us make a difference in one of the poorest countries in the world.”
